After a 5.3 magnitude earth quake hit 20 villages in Vanj district of Tajikistan on 2 January 2010, OCHA responded accordingly and deployed ROFI LES Family tents and ROFI Heaters from UN Preparedness Stock in Brindisi, Italy.

ROFI tents and heaters where distributed to more than 100 families whose houses were damaged 50% or more, and therefore unsafe or uninhabitable during winter season with temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius.   Additional tents and stoves were distributed in collaboration with the leaders of the affected communities, CoES, the Local Disaster Management Committee (LDMC), UNDP and the UN Humanitarian Affairs Officer.

The winter tents, heaters and blankets, donated by the Government of Norway through OCHA Almaty, enabled more than 100 families to leave either their temporary sleeping quarters in schools or host families, or their unsafe or inadequate houses severely damaged by the earthquake. The tents, together with heaters are expected to provide adequate shelter to these families through winter and beyond, until recovery efforts help rehabilitate or reconstruct their houses.
